Creating and refining rules is a core task for Data Analysts using Commerce Studio to align search behavior with business objectives. Rules help control how search results are displayed, ensuring they reflect pricing strategies, sales goals, seasonal trends, and other dynamic business needs.
This article guides Data Analysts through the process of defining, managing, and refining rules to achieve specific outcomes. Use cases include serving targeted inventory needs, automating promotions, and adapting search behavior to market trends. Rules can be grouped strategically to address complex requirements or prevent conflicts, ensuring they work harmoniously to deliver the desired results.
Additionally, this article covers techniques for monitoring and moderating rule performance, identifying and resolving conflicts, and collaborating effectively with team members on rule creation and modifications. With these tools, Data Analysts can ensure rules remain responsive, relevant, and aligned with evolving business goals.
Create rules to serve pricing strategies
If you notice that pricing affects sales performance of certain products, you can implement rules to account for that. For example, you can boost discounted products to increase discoverability.
-
In the Visual Editor, navigate to the product you’d like to boost.
-
Click the + Add button on the item.
-
Select Boost from the list of actions.
-
This creates an unpublished rule. Go to the Ranking Rules page to publish it.
Adapt rules based on seasonality and trends
You can configure ranking rules to align with seasonal trends. For example, set up rules that promote office supplies during back to school season.
-
Create a ranking rule in the rules wizard.
-
In the Name field, enter a unique name for the rule. In the Precedence field, enter a number or use the default value,
1
. Click Next. -
Click Select Condition, and then select the checkbox for Dates. Define the start and end dates that align with your seasonal campaign. Dates must be in ISO format, for example,
2024-12-10T19:29:34Z
. Click Next. -
From the Add Actions list, select Boost Items.
-
In the Field Name field, enter a different field or use the default,
id
. -

-
Click Next, and then click Publish.
Collaborate with team members on rule creation and modifications
Depending on your company or organization, you may collaborate with team members and colleagues when setting up rules. The following is an example workflow you can use:
-
A team member identifies the need for a new rule, for example, a seasonal boost for a product category.
-
The team member creates the new rule in Commerce Studio and shares it with the team.
-
Team members review the rule and provide feedback or suggest modifications.
-
The original creator incorporates feedback and finalizes the rule.
-
The team member publishes the rule and monitors performance, sharing results with the team.
If there are disagreements or conflicting feedback:
-
Set up a collaboration meeting to review different suggestions and reach a consensus.
-
If feedback is not clear, run a short-term test of the different rule versions using A/B testing to compare the impact.
-
Modify the rule based on testing results and team feedback.
-
For large teams, implement a formal approval workflow to ensure rule consistency and avoid confusion among collaborators.
Collaboration on rule creation and modification ensures that rules are aligned with the goals of multiple teams, improving the overall relevance and success of search strategies. Effective collaboration also minimizes errors and ensures diverse input is reflected in final rules.
